See the Latest Public Breast-Feeding Campaign to Go Viral
Leilani Rogers is a mother of four who, like many moms, constantly found herself searching for places to breast-feed in private. However, when the Texas-based birth photographer started taking pictures of other nursing moms, she began to see these moments through another lens, and her own reservations about breast-feeding in public started to fade.
That's why Leilani created the Public Breast-Feeding Awareness Project (PBAP), an annual campaign that encourages mothers around the world to share photos of themselves on social media, doing their thing at work, in parks, in bars, or anywhere their children are hungry. The consensus? An outpouring of support.
"On a global level, the purpose of this project is to help normalize public breast-feeding, something the world unfortunately sexualizes," Leilani told The Stir. "The majority of people support breast-feeding, though the minority that trolls pro-breast-feeding articles/pictures online is very vocal. I love preserving this beautiful and natural bond for mothers, and I've seen that through exposure, society becomes more accepting of it and it becomes more 'normal' in their eyes. Not only that, but other mothers see the images and feel a stronger sense of community and support. They walk away from conversations about these images with more confidence, and they are empowered enough to not place so much importance on their society's misguided views about breasts."
